The Victorian Government and NBN Co are boosting internet speeds for thousands of households and businesses, with upgrades to fixed wireless networks underway.
Under a $73 million agreement, the Victorian Government and NBN Co are improving broadband connections with more than 1,000 kilometres of fibre, almost the distance between Melbourne and Sydney.
Over the next two years more than 34,000 residences and around 7,700 businesses across 54 suburbs – including Roxburgh Park, Pakenham South, Balnarring, Geelong, Grovedale, Buninyong and Wendouree – will benefit from speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, which is typically 10 times faster than currently available.
The superfast speeds make it easier for people to connect with loved ones and work or study from home.
Fibre to the Premises
The Victorian Government is funding NBN Co to run fibre along streets past homes and businesses in selected locations. In return, NBN Co has committed to install a fibre connection at no charge all the way to eligible premises where an order for a 100 megabit per second service is placed with a participating retail service provider.
All FTTP fibre funded by the Victorian Government is due to be rolled out by mid-2024, with some locations being able to connect from mid-2023.
Business Fibre Zones
Government is also funding five new Business Fibre Zones, where the Government is subsidising infrastructure to minimise costs for businesses. Businesses in these new zones can start connecting to business-grade broadband from April.
This investment in new infrastructure will deliver better internet services where they are most needed. More locations will be announced throughout 2022.
